distilled water..

jaso Dec 17, 2003 11:26 PM

"It's important with all frogs to use either bottled drinking water (not distilled) or water that has been put through a reverse osmosis system"

Whats wrong with distilled water? I use it from time to time when im low on rainwater. Has anyone else ever used distilled water?

For misting purposes, i believe distilled water will not hurt your frogs( i use it from time to time also when I run out of RO water). However, when my pumilios were laying eggs i noticed that they kept molding-over. I spoke with pumilio.com and Thomas told me that the molding-over could be attributed to the use of distilled water. So, i used Reverse-Osmosis water, and to my surprise, weeks later, I had 5 happy little blue jean tadpoles!
Also, RO tends to not leave behind deposits on the glass walls.

Reverse Osmosis and distilled water are the same thing. THe only difference is the way in which the water is purified. There is no difference in the quality of the water between the 2 forms of purification unless it is contaminated.

how do u get ro water?

frogger88 Dec 18, 2003 06:05 PM

RO is a type of filtration. The same water that is in your tap is run through a series of filters. The first filter is a carbon filter that removes all of the larger particles in your water. the second filter is a membrane that removes the smaller partiles in your water at the cellular level removes by the ppm. THe third and final filter is another carbon filter.

THe difference between RO and Distilled is that RO is run through a series of membranous filters while the Distilled is evaporated.

I use Culligan water which is RO water, but I see residue or water spots on the tank wall. Is there something wrong with the filter or will RO leave a bit of residue too? I wonder if the one death I had with a Tinc. was due to water sometimes. And I wonder if I should buy some spring water for the misting in my Imitator tank as I have not yet had any developed eggs out of 6 cluthes. As far as Natural Spring water, what is the process of purification on this water? Just thinking about this, as my dog recently got a case of Giardia, which is a protazoan infection. The doc said that people, dogs can get it from licking up water outside in the yard or when you go hiking and drink water from a spring. Thanks-Maggie

Some say Distilled water is not even good for us, since it lacks minerals it can then pull minerals out of the body. I use bottled spring water and it is about .50 a gallon. I go through about a gallon or so a month for 4 tanks. Misting each day.

It is first important to clarify this is a discussion on water conditions not quality. the water condition is a subject concerning the acidity and mineral level or hardness of the water and water quality is a subject concerning the amount of pollutants, ie comtaminants and/or excess waste in the water. both of these issues can be taken care of using the same or similar methods, but the discussion is about the pros and cons of a few different types of naturally, mechanically, or chemically purified waters

this is true what kyle said about distilled water and it was popular in the 70's to use distilled water for cleansing toxins out of the body because of the reasons stated and many did suffer from mineral difficiencies. although the majority of the people on this "diet" were also fasting at the same time. the majority of the minerals our body needs are taken from the food we eat and not the water we drink. therefore, the flies and such combined with the dusting should overcompensate for any loss of nutrients due to any stripping from the ro or distilled water.

secondly, setting aside rain water, which is a whole other conversation which i guess we could open at some point, i beleive Ro or distilled would be the second choice before spring water or treated tap water. however, the ph is a factor that must be considered due to the fact that our plants rely more on the slight differences of the water conditions, not quality, than the frogs. ro and distilled tend to be more acidic and closer to rain water conditions and spring and treated tap tend to be more neutral.
