weird gecko

angelawina Dec 18, 2003 12:48 AM

Hello. I am a reptile person at a petco, and this week in our shipment of baby leopard geckos, we got in this very weird looking one, that I am almost POSITIVE is NOT a leo. It is the same size, and same body structure, except it's tail is obviously not going to get fat like a leo's. It is white, with brown spots, and yellow along the sides. I am very confused, because I have SEEN this species before, and just can't remember what it is. At first I thought it was a Central American Banded Gecko, but after looking at pictures online, I don't think it is. I've had leos for almost 4 years, and plan on breeding this fall, so I would HOPE I can tell the difference! Unfortuantly I do not have a picture, but any guesses could help greatly! Thanks~Angela

By body structure and so forth I'm hoping you mean that 1. It has movable eyelids, 2. it has no sticky feet 3. it has no bumps on his skin or tail (like a leo). In all honesty it is most likely a relative of the central american banded gecko. Look up the genus coleonyx on google. The central american one is c. variegatus (9 subspecies of that I belive). There is also c. brevis, c. reticulatus (rare) c. elegans c. mitratus....anyway you get the picture. Look up some pics and see if it matches. I'm almost positive that its one of the coleonyx genus from what you say (I work at a petshop too and we get random shipments of lizards like that as well). If you dont find it, I would say its safe to name it "Banded Gecko" and just put (Coleonyx ssp.) on it.

The first thing that popped into my mind was actually a hatchling patternless. All of the american Coleonyx I can think of, and C. mitratus too, are the opposite of what was described. Being beige/yellow/tan with a white wash along the sides.

What pattern are the brown blotches in??

Here are some pictures I found doing a search. Does it look like any of these?
