Egyptian Tortoise layed an egg!

sharif Jun 03, 2003 01:30 PM

Help... I recieved a phone call from my mother while I was in class on campus and she told me that my Testudo kleinmanni has laid an egg. I have no idea what to do, nor was I expecting this news. My mother is sort of freaking out, but excited in the same time. I sort of share the same feeling, but not freaking out. I would appreciate on proper way of incubating the egg. Please respond ASAP.

have your mom get a container and fill it with dry sand or what ever dry substrate and place it someplace that is at least 75 to 80 until you get home. Once you get home place the egg on dry sand and stick it in an incubator or where ever at 29 to 31 c and forget about it for 90 days or until it explodes.

Hello...

EJ, are you also Ed Pirog from the kleinmanni group?
Anyways, I decided to drive home to check it out. My mom says she hasn't checked on them at all Monday. I checked them sunday night before leaving. So the egg was layed any time from early Monday morning to early this morning. Looking at the egg, and the female... I would say it was layed on Monday evening. BTW.. the egg is sort of big compared to the female.

Now, what is or how do you make an incubator? I am scrambling to find Brendan W. Kelley's phone # because last year he gave me an adult female for free since my young one passed away and he felt sorry for me. I told him I would give him half of any eggs in the future in return.

However, I am really excited

P.S. this is a picture of Ramses... he's my boy

The easiest thing to do is go to your local feed store and get a Hovabator Incubator (About $50). Then go to Walmart and buy a digital thermometer for $12 so you can get accurate temps. You could also find a incubator on Ebay or any number of reptile sites. In the meantime do as EJ has suggested. I wish you better luck than I had with my Egyptian eggs. I incubated my two eggs and they never changed one bit. In fact it's almost been 9 months now and they still have not rotted or changed one bit. I'm hoping for better luck with the next clutch.

Brenden should be easy to hunt down. (nice thing to do)(and nice of you to follow up).
With the summer coming on you should be able to find a stable temperature somewhere. you can make an incubator from an ice chest, light fixture, bulb (of course) and a fishtank heater (the cheapest you can find) I'm assuming you have some mechanical aptitude. I'll post a diagram tomorrow.
