It depends on the species of tortoise. Forest dwelling species such as redfoots (Geochelone carbonaria) and hingebacks (Kinixys belliana) can have animal protein such as earthworms, insects, and mice, in addition to fruits and vegitables. Other species such as Geochelone sulcata should not be fed animal protein. Each species is unique, so the care should be investigated for each species, not just as a "turtle" or a "tortoise".

hello brian.
you are wondering if tortises should eat meat?
it seems that most tortise species will eat meat(or carrion)at different times.as juveniles they may eat insects & worms as well as plant matter.as adults they should be fed a varied diet of fresh vegetables, fruits, and be allowed to graze outdoors.
too much meat can cause growth abnormalities & kidney problems.
where are you from?

I'm from belgium.

We now there are species that eat meat, but its a discusion within the group of www.turtle.be . Its for the species that (so far the info goes) only eat plants and fruit.

Like testudo horstfieldii - Geochelone pardalis - Testudo Hermanni - Geochelone carbonaria - testudo hermanni boetgeri ...
So far I now they are plant eaters right?
I have onle aqua turtles.
But some poeple say its ok some say no its not healthy.
Because i like all turtles and tortoise i want to now if its ok ore not ok. So i can tel them if there right or not.

Its always in a small amount of feeding, but when its harmfull they need to stop^feeding meat.
Whith meat i don't mean steak but dry pallets for dogs.
Becaus off the proteains

If i hade a tortoise i will not feed theme the pallets.

So what do i tell theme???

No!?

Redfoots (Geochelone carbonaria) can eat some animal protein, such as earthworms or pre-killed mice or soaked dog food, but only as part of the diet, NOT as the only food. They can also have fruit. The Tortoise Trust at http://tortoisetrust.org has care sheets and good information on these species.

The other species you mentioned should not have animal protein.

In some parts of the world "tortoise" means a land turtle. In other parts (UK and Australia) it can mean a water turtle. There are several products that are specifically prepared for land tortoises, but I don't know where you live and if you can buy them. If you do have a land tortoise, you may feed it "greens" such as Kale, collard greens or Romaine lettuce with a special vitamin and mineral supplement for reptiles, plus other vegetables and fruits. Please tell us where you live and what commercial products are available to you. Most animal products should be fed only in very limited amounts to land tortoises ot it may cause the shell to be deformed.
