maybe dumb question, but what is Coccidia?

mismodliz Dec 18, 2003 08:40 AM

Can someone post some simple yet insightful info? Everyone talks about their levels and how to treat, but what is it exactly?

Thanks so much!

Hi,

It is a one-celled parasite that can live in the intestines of all animals, bearded dragons included. It is not related to bacteria, but much bigger and more developed. Normal antibiotics don't work against them. They are somewhat host-specific: you can't get them from your bearded dragon yourself !!
They destroy the surface of the intestines, making your dragon feel sick, with or without diarrhoea.
They are very hard to kill, but there are therapeutics that work, ask your vet. But they can survive in the terrarium as well, so you have to clean that as well, desinfecting doesn't work at all!! (exept a blowtorch)

It is a protazoal micro organism (parasite) found in the lower digestive tract. If you do a search on the net, you should be able to find a couple sites that even have pictures Infact, here is a site: http://www.cvm.okstate.edu/instruction/kocan/vpar5333/5333iii.htm Just copy and paste.
