Rock eating Sulcata

lldg Dec 18, 2003 10:29 AM

I have a three year old sulcata, in good health, who is insisting on eating small pebbles & small rocks. He gets a variety of food once a day when he is in his indoor enclosure with Repti-calcium and Herpetivite lightly sprinkled, and for about a half-hour to an hour he gets to go outside and graze on what ever grass and weeds we can find (it is getting cooler so his time outside is limited).

When he is outside he goes after the little rocks that are found washed up from my yard. Most of the time I can prevent him from getting to them but he has over the last week eaten several that I have seen (he has to be supervised as our fence is not yet completed).

Is he lacking something mineral-wise in his supplements? Besides the normal "don't let him eat the rocks" advice, what else is suggested?

Don't worry, they all tend to eat the smaller sized pebbles/rocks, usually white/light in colour.
Usually they pop out the other end, have a squidge around in the poop to satisfy yourself that he has past them, now that's good fun

Try offering cuttlefish bone with the hard backing removed, ie just the softer piece, then stand back as he will consume vast qty over the next few yrs.
My three, 20,25 & 30kg Sulcata's eat around 12 full cuttles per week BY CHOICE.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had some cuttlebone and cut it up for Frankie. Just as you said, he went to town chomping up the whole thing.
