Here's a Hwy 377 baby Texas Bairds . . .>

terryp Dec 18, 2003 10:33 AM

Here's an F1 from a pair of Texas Bairds collected on Hwy 377. The story goes that Hwy 277 was busy for several nights. It was decided to try Hwy 377 for a couple nights. A female bairds was collected early in the evening. After several subsequent runs along Hwy 377, there was a male collected at the same spot the female was collected. It was thought that the male had followed the scent (pheromones)of the female right up to the spot she was collected earlier that evening. That's the story as told to me. This is the first Hwy 377 bairds I have had so I'm just like a kid again waiting to see how they will turn out as adults.

Hey Terry
Nice looking snake there!! You know what really stood out to me was???

Take a look at the snakes color and pattern about midway. What does it look like???

It looks alot like what some of the sub-adult prairie kings look like here in KY!! That is really cool!!

Wont last though will it!! LOL

Do you mean where the tail looks like it is pointing to? It seems the crossbars are getting close to the side speckles and appear to almost be bands. Is that what you mean Brian? Unfortunately and/or fortunately they will fade and turn to stripes. Although, I don't know what they will look like as adults yet.

Without giving up any secrets can you say what part of 377? The north end is near me, and it also runs right through my home town. Just curious.

He told me they were hunting hwy 377 where it forks off hwy 277 when they collected the bairds. I guess that is either ValVerde County or Edwards County. I hope that helps.

Yes. It does look alot like a prairie king. Even the coloration. Uncanny!!
About the fading, yeah, thats what I meant when I said "wont last though". But it is pretty neat.

Your getting quite the collection going Terry, Im anxious to see what you start kicking out here in the next few years.

Terry........the blotches look fairly light on that youngster toward the posterior. I'll bet that juvey turns into one of those faintly striped, gunmetal gray beauties.......you know that I'm partial to those......lol.

oh by the way.......did you ever see the parents or pics of them?

terryp Dec 19, 2003 02:04 PM

No I haven't seen the parents or any pics of them. I didn't even see pics of these before I got them. I did notice after I got them that the dorsal crossbars are thinner than the crossbars of other bairds. I see you've been really looking over the baird pics to see that one or several visible traits that you want Steve. LOL. I want to see if or how this might affect the transition to stripes. The thin dorsal crossbars are already faint towards the tail end as you have noticed. Maybe the stripes will be hardly visible and be the stripeless bairds that Shaky has been keeping an eye out for. Maybe they will be stripeless and have a chartreuse ground color around the head and going back like that beauty you posted pics of Steve. I'm like all the others who pickedup a bairds rat snake or two this year. I raise them and see what they look like in about 2 years. Next year we can posts pics of the ones we got this year and see what they've done. I love it. I can post a pic of my bairds off and on and its like posting a new pic for everyone. I love when other people do it.
