What size heat bulb?

cito Dec 18, 2003 02:09 PM

Ok sorry about all the posts but problems seem to keep popping up everywhere. After i get one solved, a new one appears. On the vision 422 there is a 6" heat dome. Some websites say that you can use a 100watt bulb, and others say the max is 75 without causing the dome to melt or a fire or something, and others say the max is 60. What is the max?

One thing about the Vision cages is that the heat lamp shrouds drop down quite a bit so you really don't need a very high wattage bulb to provide a toasty basking area while boosting ambient temps. A 60 to 75 watt bulb will probably be plenty...you might consider a ceramic heating element (like a 60 watt) by ESU; this way, you can leave the device on continually. I have heard some people using higher wattage bulbs and their snakes getting burned badly. Good luck and keep asking questions (a thermometer will also take away the guessing game or a infrared point and click type of thermometer - that is what I use).

Watts, it really depends, I use 50 watt (Red) in my vision, I was told not to go any higher, because like the post above they will burn. Then someone told me that as far as saying what watt to use it depends on alot of things. I have that 50 watt (red) going in my vision and for a 20 gallon long tank, and then in my big glass tank I use a 100 watt (Reds) on both sides and then a 50 watt with the 100 watt. I never turn them off, and in the summer I just dont use as much. Whatever size you use just put a thermometer under there and see how hot it gets. And you should be good to go. You don't want to fry them and reptiles will fry and not move just like they will freeze and not move, at least some.

I have a question about those ceramic lights that just heat up and dont really produce light, has anyone had problems with those. When I put mine in it smelled like it was burning, maybe it was just the start of the light when it was heating up.

What size vision do you use your 50 watt in? Should two radient heat panels (11"x11" and a 60 watt bulb be enough for 1/2 the cage? I have a digital thermometer and thermostat so i dont have to worry about them over heating, but that will surely be enough right?

The vision is a 4ft one. The problem with my set up is it only heats up the spot, and thats where if I use a higher bulb it will fry in that spot. I also use a cobra heat pad on the other side. The temps are good. About the heat panels, I could not answer about heat panels. Maybe you can plug in one and see what that gets you and then if needed the other. Any one answer that?
