quick question...really!

lele Dec 18, 2003 04:16 PM

I have been using repti-cal and herptivite. When I give them on the same day I mix them together. I understand that there can be some degredation once combined. Should I only mix what I need for each feeding or can I reuse it? Thanks

I don't reuse mine. Mainly because there's always a little cricket poop in it afterwards, and I don't want to feed my animals yesterdays cricket poop. I don't know how anyone else does it. I also use Rep-Cal calcium w/D3 and Herptivite. I mix them with Sticky Farms Indoor Miner-All in a huge salt shaker. This makes it easy for me to shake out only what I need.
Hope this helps.

Cricket,

I had thought about the poop thing and I actually dump the crickets into a container by themselves, then I sift out the poop(!) am I obsessive or what? LOL!

I like your idea of a salt shaker but I had read/heard (not sure where other than Rep-Cal's label) that once combined the vit A (beta carotene) degrades. I do re-use but only once or twice, though I am now re-thinking this...

btw, I ude the Cal w/D3

I've always heard that too much vitamin A can cause tremendous problems. But I'm really not sure about this. Anyway, I've been doing mine the same way for over three years now & have never had any problems with the adults or babies. Maybe someone else will post a different opinion. I'm always up to learning the facts.

Oh, and I feed my crickets carrots along with other things too. Doesn't carrots have beta-carotene? Now you've got me wondering what effect my way of dusting would effect that.
Darned, try to help you, now you've got me thinking! LOL

OK here's the scoop. I'm reading this off the label of Rep-Cal Herptivite with Beta Carotene. It says for us to mix the Herptivite with their Rep-Cal calcium w/d3. According to what it says, some beadlets of beta carotene could possibly be damaged by the calcium during manufacturing if they mixed it for us.
Herptivite contains no vitamin A. They use beta carotene, which is an anti-oxidant that is converted into vit. A in a regulated way so there is no threat of vit. A toxicity.
Now we know, and you were right. It did say something about it on the label, but I've been using this stuff for so long that I hadn't even bothered to read it again until now. I read ir years ago, but grabbing it, mixing it, & using it has become a daily habit.
Guess I need to go back & read more labels again of stuff I normally use. Changes in use or ingredients could have very well taken place without my knowledge.

yes, carrots do provide LOTS of beta carotene. BC is safer than a synthetic Vit A. I feed them to my feeders along with other fruits and veggies.

Awhile back I spoke with the maker of Miner-All www.miner-all.net/STFMINER-ALL.htm (Sticky Tongue Farms) and he felt that their product is of higher quality than RepCal (makes sense )and one of the points he made was the degradation of the BC once it is combined with the calcium and I may switch once RepCal is used up.

They were supposed to be coming out with a vitamin supplement called Vitrol (or something like that) but I don't see it on their site. Ugh! the supplement dilemma! :/
