Larval development in buzzatti

astubbs Dec 18, 2003 05:45 PM

Hi,

I thought that I would say that I bought 3 buzzatti cultures from fly culture and have been attempting to culture them. I am now seeing larval development in the cultures I started. The buzzatti larva seem to turn the surface of the media purple tinge (some may have thought that this was mold). I had tried to establish 4 different cultures (all using the media from fly culture), one had a spoonful of media from an already established culture, and the others with varying amounts of water. It seems that the larva are not able to become established with very dry media and that the only justification for using less water is to prevent the adults from dying prematurely. The culture that was seeded with media from an established culture seemed to mature faster (I do this when making all of my other fly cultures.) I have been feeding out buzzatti from the bought cultures to my castaneoticus, panguana lamasi, amazonicus, auratus and others. I believe that this fly is great for all of these frogs. My quinq group frogs seem to like them and I like it because I have to toss less flies in the tank. I do not see what the problem others have with culturing them is, but mine are doing fine and they are proving to be a useful food item for BOTH smaller and larger frogs. I will post again when I have more info.

Also so that no one says this I am in no way affiliated with fly culture and am in fact a customer of both Ed’s (Erin was one of the people that helped me the most when I was first starting to keep darts) and Fly culture.

Good to see you posting on the forum again. I was just curious about your thoughts on "why culture buzzatti." Is the only advantage that it's a step down from hydei (and is therefore readily eaten by thumbnails), but still has a quick life cycle?

If that's it, I'm not sure I'm sold on collecting one more fruit fly to culture.

Hi,

The buzzatti are different from hydei in their behavior and I am replacing my hydei cultures with buzzatti. I believe that they are a more useful food item. The buzzatti also seem a little less prone to climb and escape, also I think my frogs may like some variety in their food. I am still evaluating this and I will get back to you when I have something more conclusive.

I just got some of the Buzzatti. How do you see difference in behavior, and is that the reason you feel them to be a better food source? thanks-Maggie
