Not a regular, but would like an opinion

I mostly breed kings and milks, but last year I tried some rats. From most of the quadrivitta that I've seen this one seems pretty nice. I just love how active they are, and would appreciate it if any one could let me know of other elaphe that are as active. I have corns, but they don't fit my fancy so to speak. Thanks for reading-Smokey

It depends how tame and how you keep them, temps, etc., but these guys are lot like racers. They have a lot going for them and make very interesting captives, holding their value too, but I'm becoming more and more convinced they are related to the racers. In 2002, Helfenberger proposed they be split into a resurrected genus, Zamenis, along with E. longissima, persica, hohenackeri, and lineata. IMO, these are all racer-like ratsnakes for various reasons.

I hatched out a clutch of four last summer of the leopard snakes and they were the cutest little buggers and very snappy. Every time I would try to pick one up I'd get nailed. That's not the case with E. guttata, or many other ratsnakes, LOL. I'll be anxious to see if hohenackeri is like situla when the first of those are hatched out. Any additional info is appreciated, btw. And just so's everyone knows what I'm referring to, here's a pic...

Later....

Terry-
beautiful snakes...what's the temperment of your adults like? A few years back a vendor at a show let me handle a couple-of-months-old baby and it seemed very calm. Wish I had picked it up, but at the time $250 snakes were out of my price range.

I actually like these snakes as pets as adults more than as babies. They tame down over time and my adults were pretty good pets. Even more so, they were beautiful and fairly easy to care for. They display well too. TC.

Well like most things with snakes (at least obsoleta) a lot of it depends on the individual snake. In my collection it does seem that my yellow and everglades tend to be more active than my other "NA ratsnakes". And naturally all snakes will become more active when they are hungery. If active snakes are what you want racers and coachwhips fit that bill, but would not be recomended for the novice or begginner.

Nice looking snake

My taeinura is almost always out where I can see him. My carinata appear to be pretty restless too, even though they're just babies.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?
