any and all info on fantail uromastyx

topacelot Jun 03, 2003 02:40 PM

I came across these at the last reptile show I went to and really wanted to know everything about them as a possibility for a future pet. Unfortunately, the guy manning the booth was very new and the guy who knew everything had to go work out something with his car to not get a ticket.

Anyway, they seemed pretty calm and not too fast. They were willing to just sit in my hand and not take off. I was wondering if that was b/c of being cool all day at the show. They were young, about 3-4 inches. What's their full size? Diet? Cage requirements?

Thanks for any help. I just can't seem to find info on them anywhere.

I think you may be referring to the Dwarf Shield Agama (xenagama taylori). They stay little, 3-3.5" and weighing in the 20-25 gram area. They have similar requirements to bearded dragons with a diet of crickets, mealworms, etc. with salad offered a few times a week. Cute little guys. If you go the Kingsnake header and click on Care Sheets/FAQS/Features there is a caresheet on them. I believe there is another one possibly called the Club Tail Agama??? Not an expert here, just thought I read about it somewhere. Good luck.

This sounds like either Xenagama Taylori or Xenagama Battilifera, neither of which are a uromastyx. The common names would be "dwarf shield tail agama" or "beaver tail agama" or "false uromastyx" (the last one probably the one that causes confusion). Their care is more like that of bearded dragons.
Try this site http://www.gherp.com/taylori/xenagama.htm it should have some good info.
