Mercury Vapour Bulbs.
They supply both heat and UV rays, for a longer time the the typical bulb.

Chris, do you ever write anything in your posts besides the title? Seems like everything you ever say is in the title followed by N/P. Just curious.

Just for you I'll write in the box for once...

(I dunno, I guess it's faster that way...or I feel that maybe it's easier for people to answer my question if they don't have to read so much...I guess I try to make it short and to the point)

Anyway,

I've heard these things are very hot, and very expensive...and can be dangerous if you do not have an extra basking spot because if the mv bulb is the only hot spot...then the animal could overdo the UV intake??? Is any of that true??? Also, how long do these things last??? I think a typical 5.0 UV output bulb lasts anywhere from 6-12 months...also...

Does anyone know where to pick up a UV meter???

I've never used a MV bulb.... I think I may try in the near future, but I hate to pay so much for a bulb to run the risk of it getting broken or being a dud and making me angry. I've dropped a few BRAND NEW 5.0 bulbs before ever plugging them in and I never forgave myself since. I've had good success with Reptisun 5.0 bulbs and I'm stickin with them! I don't know where to get a UV meter, but someone was talking about them 2 or 3 weeks ago maybe scan back through the forums you'll find it. Typical florescent Reptisun bulbs do last about 6-9 months I think. I replaced mine recently that were 9 months old. I didn't check them, but they claim they're good for a year if I remember correctly, but never hurts to replace them (besides the wallet). LLLREPTILE is where I get mine from they have the best prices on them I've seen and if you act quick they have a 3 for the price of 2 thing going on for X-Mas. It's $39 for 3 bulbs any size. Also, because of the price being the same, it's smart to use 4 foot bulbs, and run them over the top of a few cages in a row, so you don't need individual lights for each cage. I position my cages in rows on 8 foot tables with 2 light fixtures over the tops of them all. Works great.

Tyler.....the bulbs at LLL are 19.95 each. By my calculations, with the 4 for the price of 3 you pay 60 for 4 bulbs....I dont see how that equals 39...I was ready to jump on that deal too...LOL!!! Petguys.com has the iguana lights 5.0 for 18.99 right now (4ft size). I usually buy the reptiglo 8.0 bulbs from them and they do last over a year with no degradation of the UVB light. I had a friend test my first set of lights at one year exactly and the output was still at 6% uvb.

Just my 2 cents

They've changed it now. A few days ago they were selling 3 bulbs for 39.99. It was a special only for those bulbs. Now it has changed to 4 for the price of 3, along with other items.
