TOKAY EGGS. NEED A LITTLE HELP.

Dave.W Dec 18, 2003 11:43 PM

Hi, I was just changing the water in my tokays waterfall when I noticed 2, all white, hard shelled eggs. Well, I'm not sure when they were laid but I'm sure it wasn't too long ago given their condition. They were laid in a spot in the tank where the temp. is roughly always 22-25 celcius. I'm not confident that they will hatch as this is her first ever known clutch out of all 3 owners of this pair. Is it ok to put the eggs (undisturbed from the object) in a warmer place to incubate? or would the rise in temps. cause harm to the eggs?
Any help would be great!

I remove the eggs, but Ingo feels otherwise. Incubating tokay eggs at 80% hum. and 82 degrees F has worked for me. Check with Ingo though, he feels quite strongly about his method.

Tokays will normally lay their eggs where conditions are good to hatch. Ive removed a couple sets and incubated in a incubater with no problems. Lately Ive left eggs in with the adults and they have hatched just fine and the babies seem to be growing better than the ones I seperated. BTW they lay the eggs on a large rock at the bottom of the tank, heat source is at the top, and I thought it wasnt warm enough but theres 5 hatchlings running around in there now. The eggs will take over 90 days to hatch up to 200, mine average around 110 days.

Mine also laid on a rock in the cool part of the tank and the heat sources both above and undertank are quite a distance away.
I didn't really feel safe though as it gets pretty chilly in here during winter and blackouts are common.
There are 2 eggs and are now incubating at about 85 F at approx. 80% humidity.

I'm not sure if the eggs are fertile though! Is there anyway of knowing besides going through the gestation period? and besides shining a flashlight because it won't work due to the light not getting through. (They are glued to the wall of the inside of the SMALL rock-cave)

It is very hard to candle a Tokay egg. After about 60 days I could use a strong pen flashlight and hold it up against the side of one egg. Its very hard but I could see a dark spot usually toward the top with a lighter pinkish color around the edges. With the eggs glued to something and then to each other also its a difficult task. Then add two females laying in the same spot with a group of 14-18 eggs and its impossible, just have to wait them out. Good luck, the hatchlings come out shedding, ready to eat and ready to take on anything it feels threatens it(you).
