I'm setting up home for my new baby, and need some answeres

shopaholic Dec 19, 2003 01:11 AM

Hi I bought a display cage from LLL Reptiles. What I'm wondering is what I need to do, if anything, to desinfect the cage since they used it to display animals they were selling. The plant was used too with the animals.

Also, I have a very nice Stainless steel, zoo grade bird cage that I would like to prepare for outdoor sunning days. How do I prep this cage from desenfecting, to furnishings, to providing the right cover for sunning/shading?

Thanks everybody, my new Panther will arrive in January. Maggie

The very least wipe down the cage with bleach/water. As for the plant if your worried about bateria from fecal matter or such i would toss it. You can buy a new (not expensive). It wouldn't be worth the chance of your baby getting something (parasites) and possibly dying due to transmition of parasites.

Hi Maggie,

Congrats on your new addition! If you use bleach just be sure to rinse it well. You can also use Nolvasan for disinfecting. I get it from my vet - it is typically about $1/oz and you use 3oz./gal of water.

I agree on the plant. Either toss it or quarantine it, change soil and pot and don't use for at least a month. Depending on the size and type of plant this very well may not be worth it.

If you go to the Kammers site (below) they have a great cage setup check list. If you haven't already purchased books I would recommend CHAMELEONS THEIR CARE AND BREEDING by LINDA DAVISON. I have others but I reference this one most. You have been great about educating yourself before purchase (wish everyone did!) but don't stop now! Explore the sites we have recommended, look thru old posts (you can get to the archives of this forum with link above), and keep asking questions!

Thanks you guys for the great points in the right direction! I'm chucking the plant or using it as a house plant. But if i buy a new plant from the store, what's to prevent it from having some lurking thing I can not see which will make me wake up in the middle of the night to look frantically at the Cham to see if he is OK(Do i have first time mother's anxiety or what)? I have read that book already(2xs)and the Kammmer's care sheets and emailed them. But somehow, I feel I must become an expert before he arrives! I will spend the rest of the time looking at old posts as you suggested lele. I will get that stuff to disenfect from the vet! And I will prepare EVERY Cage furnishing with instructions given by the Kammers. Thanks!!!! Maggie

When i got a shefflera tree(umbrella plant) for my chams cage, ilet it sit outside in the cold for about a week(just lazy i guess ), washed it THOROUGHLY, changed the dirt(to get the fert. out), havent had any probs with it or my cham, she LOVES it.now if i could just figure out if it was my dripper that killed my pothos........
