Black Milk

SiLeNcE Dec 19, 2003 03:29 AM

I recently purchased a 5 1/2 ft black milk. She's roughly 4 years old, eats well and was a show snake for kindergarten students. She's very tame doesnt try striking or anything. My question is will a tank 3'x 2'x 16" high be big enough. thanks in advance.

Hello,
Black milks have great temperaments... a perfect choice for a classroom full of young children. I think that as their price gets down to the range where beginners can afford them, they will become much more popular. Adult females are usually very expensive, if you can find them at all... I hope you got an educational discount! Anyway, to answer your question, that cage sounds a little small to me. Milks don't need to stretch out and climb as some species do, so height isn't too important. As far as width/length goes, I've read that it should be about 2/3 to 3/4 by 1/2 the length of the snake, so a 4' x 3' cage would be more suitable. Good luck!

nate,
No I didnt get an educational discount. I bought her for $100 even at Chicago House of reptiles. If your ever in Chicago stop by there. They usually have some awesome deals going on. I'm not sure if $100 is a good price for her but I do know as soon as I saw her I had to buy. They have a pair of albino hondurans proven to be a mating pair going for 200 bucks. I may take that offer up.

If Anyone happens to know where I can find an Eastern Milk with the kinda camo looking pattern drop me a line I really want one.

100 bucks is cheaper than most juveniles so thats a great deal ! 200 bucks for a pair of Albino Hondurans ??? That seems more odd than the 100 for the Black Milk.

well glad I got a good price. And yeah 200 for the mating pair sounded decent. Like I said they usually have pretty good deals.

It sounds like they are giving the snakes away. $100.00 is insanity. I have never heard of such maddness. You scored the deal of a life time. You ought to jump on that albino deal if its not too late.

Cool snake and good choice.
I think a cage with a 3 x 2 ft. floor space is quite sufficient for that size black milk. If it were to get to 6 ft and you had a 4 x 2 ft. cage and available space that would be ideal but I think you are fine with what you have even with it getting up to 6 ft.
I have a couple of pairs from two different bloodlines and haven't found them to be a especially active species in general whether day or night. Hope this was helpful.
