Crested geckos and stump tails

clp Dec 19, 2003 07:08 AM

Hello,

I have been looking into getting a few crested geckos, I see several vendors sell stumped tailed ones...
Why are there so many stump taileds?....... do they fall off easy?. birth defect?...... escape method?

Would love to know...

Thanks

Cresteds will drop their tails if frightened and the tails don't grow back. . So once they drop their tails, they're stuck with a stump. This happened to one of my males, the day we got him. I'd imagine a lot of the stump tails dropped their tails because they didn't get handled a lot and aren't used to people. Or they might just be naturally nervous. Or they could be perfectly nice but just had a bad day. They're not as pretty without their tails so stubbies sell for cheap.
At any rate, a crested without a tail is a little less fun but just as healthy. They don't store fat in their tails like some other geckos do.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

when crested geckos get scared, frightened, fight with each other, etc... their tails fall off to distract their "predators." sometimes, even though they are caged alone, people find them with their tail gone without knowing why . unlike leopard geckos, their tails do not grow back - instead they just form the little stump. usually, these cresteds are a bit cheaper because of that. be careful not to handle cresteds by their tails, because it falls off easier that way good luck and take care!

Alot of the times when the cresteds are juvies, and its impossible to tell whose male, and whose female, the males fight and usually lose their tails. Also during breeding they MAY drop their tails.
