Harker Dec 19, 2003 08:50 AM

Erm he didnt really move all night last night, Just coiled in his leafy branchs (hot side), so i lifted the lid of the tank to check he was ok, and he just climbed down and is moving around ok now checking the place out! He's sticking to the hot side though?

Cheers Anthony.

He probably moved last night and you just don't know it. They are nocturnal.

I can't tell if your snake is legitametly sick, or simply stressed. But I think your going to want to treat him to a little special privacy and quite either way.

When you put your hand in there and attempted to touch him, you said he went ahead and moved? Was it a lethargic kind of drag...or a dart away from potential predator? If it was a good strong flee responce, I think I would just leave him be for at least a good week. Make sure he has good hides on both sides and maybe drape a towel over the tank for the first week as well. Then try feeding.

If he is still being lethargic this morning after time to acclimate to the temp in his tank.........I think you may need to take him to a vet.

Good Luck

He didnt dart as such but moved quickly... but he's seeming to be moving quite alot more now climbing his braches, he looks asthough he's checking the place out moving to each side of the tank everynow and then, but its 3pm here hes bound not to be moving that much i guess...

Cheers Anthony.

Is this your first snake? Maybe you said before and I just missed it.

It sounds like maybe he was just a little freaked my the drive and change, Keep an eye on him to be sure, but he sounds like he's acting pretty normal now

cheers, erm he's moved back to his spot on the leaves in the (hot side) again, but there not very active during the day anyway...? how long should i wait before i hold him again? and if he persists in been slow and clumbsy, how long should i wait before consulting the vet?

Cheers Anthony.

what is the temp on the hot side? and on the cool? I would give him probably a week to aclimate to his new set up. Keep an eye on the temps, maybe he likes the hot side because the cool side is too cool, or maybe he just likes the heat. My anery is almost always on the hot side, he just likes it there.

And no, they don't usually do much in the day, maybe stretch and get a drink, or look for an escape route. But generally they are "crepuscular" comming out in the early morning or late evening, when their wild counterparts are out hunting for rodents and things.

It gets easier to know what they're up to. I feel they really do have personalities, and some are lazier than others. As long as he eats, poops, and sheds regularly and normal, he should be great If he refuses food or regurges, and you are worried, a trip to the vet is a good way to "be sure" he's okay.

Have fun, and don't be surprized when you catch the Corn Fever! you can't have just one....

Looks good for a hatchling

When he starts getting bigger you'll want to move him into at least a 20 gal-long tank. I got mine when PetSmart had them on sale for only 20$ a piece, and they have a nice slide screen top that locks in place. But there are a ton of other adult caging options, from a simple rubbermaid with air holes, to a custom built "Vivarium" (for those who are much much richer than I)
