Treating WC Jacksons

Solomon Dec 19, 2003 11:00 AM

I'm thinking on getting a pair of Jacksons and WC are the only ones I can find. Is there anything I should be aware of and/or treat them for?

Thanks -

First, ask the seller what they have been treated for if anything (but be skeptical and follow up yourself). Find out where they originated. Then, take a fresh fecal sample to a vet. They can identify any intestinal parasites present and decide what specifically should be used to treat them. Many dealers "shotgun" chams hoping to kill the major ones. But, without a fecal you'll never know for sure. Small populations of some parasites are not a big problem and the treatment could be more damaging to the cham. Some people let their new chams acclimate and rehydrate for a couple of weeks before treating, as the drugs are rough on kidneys. If the cham is generally active, eating and drinking this may be best.

You also know you'll need to house them separately, right? Just checking.

It's hard to believe that you can't find any CB Jacksons. Personally, I would not purchase a WC unless I was ready to challenge the internal parasites and stress. They also take an extremely long time to acclimate. WC's are okay if you want to add new bloodlines to your breeders, but that's about it. Now, I'm not really knocking them, but there is just so much involved in getting them straightened out. You can't always rely on the seller giving you accurate info on their history, 'cause they want your money.
Try checking the classified forum on chameleons. There are lots of reputable breeders out there that would better to suit your needs, and answer any questions you may have with direct, honest answers. WC's are often dehydrated & full of parasites. If you decide on a WC, I'd have it checked by a vet ASAP.
Hope this helps,
Cricket
