tongue problems

Lancecham Dec 19, 2003 11:25 AM

I recently purchased a 7 month old female panther a week ago from a private party. He had her for 6 months and the the set up she was in was adequete. She is of nice size and coloration. My set up is complete and including new bulbs. She has a good appetite, drinks, has good coloration and is active. The only problem is that she doesn't shoot her tongue to feed. She will stick the tongue out slowly 1 to 1 1/2 inches and move towards the prey until it sticks to the tongue. The guy stated she gave her a lot of calcium the prior months because she was growing rapidly. I don't know about his feeder gut loading techniques, but I have always done it.
My question is what could be the cause? What are the symptoms of too much or too little calcium.

If she could always get right up close to her food she may not have developed much muscle tone in her tongue or learned to shoot at a distance. Tongue problems can be nutritional though. I don't know what you are gutloading with. He may have oversupplemented her but that's hard to know. There is an interesting article on the chameleon tongue here:
