baby kingsnake not eating after illness

SittonJ Dec 19, 2003 12:34 PM

I have a baby thayeri maybe 2-3 months old that was not eating since I got her (over a month). I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with bacterial gastritis, a GI parasite, and a mouth infection. She was given Flagyl for 5 days, stopped for 3 days and on again for 5. This seems to have cleared the infections as far as the vet could tell - but she still won't eat and shows no interest in life - is pretty listless. I have been forcefeeding her pinkies, directed by the doctor but I am very discouraged. She tries to push the pinkie out as I push it in and once it is in past her mouth fully - she doesn't try to swallow it or move it to the stomach. Actually, she doesn't try to move at all. After giving her 10 min or so to see if she will move, I then massage the pinkie down to her stomach. I feel like she just doesn't want to live. How long should I force feed her before just giving up? Is there anything else I could be doing?

Does the snake have decent body weight or is it emaciated?

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

Is she dehydrated? Also, if she is eating, is she absorbing the food you give her? Her normal intestinal flora were fighting with the transients that caused disease in the first place and are probably in numbers too low to do any good. I strongly recommend paying heed to anything on Kaplan's site. http://www.anapsid.org/emaciation.html Should tell you everything you need to know.
