refreshing my memory

I used to have a king snake, and just got another one. This might sound like a dumb question, but do I turn the light off at night, or do they need light all the time. And, my snake is a baby, about 10 cm's in length. Is it safe to start feeding it right away, or should I wait till it sheds.

My mistake, he's not 10 cm,s I meant 6 inches.
