Getting a Tiawan Beauty. Tips?

Langi Dec 19, 2003 11:07 PM

I'll be getting a beauty snake soon and I just wanted some tips from people who keep them. The snake I'm getting is eating fuzzies and is still in a shoe box rack. How long can I keep him in a ten gl.? When its full grown does he need a more aboreal cage? What are the exact temps and humidity they need? How long will he take to be full grown? Thanks, and if you have any other helpfull tips please let me know.

Mine reached 6 feet in two years and is still growing. The 10 gallon won't last you long. Watch out for the feeding response on these guys. Mine is very friendly outside of his cage, but anything moving inside his cage is food to him. I'm feeding him more than my larger American rat and he still doesn't think it's enough.
Oh yeah... when you're handling him, be careful that he doesn't get himself tangled up in things like shower curtain rods, doors, desks, the insides of couches, ect. ect.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

Taiwans get huge fast. For the first two years it seems whatever they eat goes strictly to length and not to their girth. A unique thing about them is they are so big but move around like colubrids (rather than just lying around like the Boid family).
I have to second the feeding response made earlier. I wouldn't feed them in their cage, but rather give them a seperate feeding container. The one in the picture was the most shy feeder where food had to be left overnight (dead rats) but some others had a "feeding frenzy" response.
When I use to sell them at shows, these guys were always a tremendous hit because the colors are just so stunning. Good luck and email me anytime if you ever have questions.

They are very hardy animals, like cooler temps (76ish)and will use climbing branches if offered. OH and don't turn your back on them when cleaning cages - They can sneak away at an unbelievable speed.

PS I don't breed them anymore, but love to see great pics of them.

Thank you guys, I can't wait to get mine. I have an empty cage on my rack that I think will fit a full grown beauty so when he does grow out of the ten gal I'll have a spot for him. Now all I need is remember its Taiwan not Tiawan. =^-^=
