Odd Shedding Issue

homeslice Dec 20, 2003 01:20 AM

Ok this may sound really really weird but maybe its common and its just weird to me.

My python shed properly recently and one of her eyes shed and one of her eyes didnt. Like she still has a whiteish coat over her one eyeball. Its a little odd and like i cant really fix it by pulling it off ya know?

Any advice here?

It sounds like she has a retained eyecap, but I am not going to advise that you try to pull it off as you don't sound overly familiar with this condition (no offense intended). If you know a highly experienced reptile keeper have them look at it to try to verify that it is in fact a retained eyecap and only then it should be pulled off. Otherwise don't mess with it and take her to a qualified vet. A retained eyecap is not a major problem or complex condition but if it is something else, it can be and you don't ever want to mess with their eyes if you don't know for CERTAIN that it is in fact a retained eyecap. Severe, permanent damage to the eye can result if you try to remove an extra eyecap that isn't there.

Keep us posted with the progress of the situation.

Hi – Do you mean you looked at her shed skin from her head and saw one eyecap there and one missing? Or are you just thinking that since her eye looks whitish, she must have an unshed eyecap still there? If she does have a retained eyecap, and you don’t have anyone to show you how to go about getting it off safely, it shouldn’t be a big deal for it to stay there until her next shed.

Well she shed about 2 weeks ago and right after the shed it seems like one eye shed and the other didn't. She seems to be moving around alright like she can see and everything. It didn't just appear out of nowhere. It was right after a shed. Do you guys think it can wait til the next shed?

It would seem to me it might help to be sure to keep the snake moist for a few days at least, posibly promoting it coming off it is a retained eye cap. Don't see that could hurt while it may help.
