a few roach questions.......... a bit long

herpluver Dec 20, 2003 02:15 AM

i have hissers right now, i'm trying to get things organized. so here is the situation, i just got 500 roaches and i have a bunch of extra 10 gallon tanks i would like to set up "colonys" in them, i'm tired of digging thru all the roaches to get the ones i want to feed. so i want to set up feeder and breeders tanks. what would be a good male to female ratio? i know some ppl are going to say use rubbermaid containers but i want to use the 10's because i already have them.

i soon plan on getting discoids and lobsters also, are they as easy to sex as hissers, or is it even possible?

if you have any other idea's or suggestions i would love to here them.

Ratios and numbers are gonna depend on how fast you want to feed from them. But with 500 I think you should be set. I started with half a dozen (son's pets) a year ago and now have two ten gal tanks with a couple three hundred in each....and that is with me trying NOT to breed them.
Biggest thing.....HEAT, especially with Hissers.
Something else I read was that rather than worry about the number of male:females worry about the layers of hide areas for each male to establish himself in.

Don't know discoids but the lobsters breed even easier than hissers and should take off for you. I took a tub of them off heat to slow them down a bit and barely notice the difference as they are still going gangbusters.

so if everything were set up perfect and i wanted maximum production, what would be a good number for a 10 gallon tank?

No idea on the hisser or lobster since I don't own any. But the discoids are not easy to sex. Both genders have wings as adults. The dubia, also called orange spotted, are easily sexed because adult males have wings. Females have small wing case which can distinguish them from older juvies.
