There is a beaver lodge at the edge of a swamp where I walk every day and there are always 3 water snakes basking on it which immediately disappear when they see a human. I figured it was impossible to catch a snake from this location since there are a hundred different holes and crevices and after disappearing I know the snakes cover at least 5 yards underwater in a matter of seconds. Then while I was walking I found a toad which I catch regularly to feed my current water snake (that hungry bugger puts away 4 toads a week and yesterday ate a dead mole). I took the toad to that spot where a nice, patternless NWS was sitting. I got as close as I could, tossed the toad in front of him and he went for it! I walked right up to the snake, and could have grabbed it easily but I sometimes hesitate so not only did the snake get away but he got a free meal.
