Deckerts rat snake female (pic) plus a question . .>

terryp Jun 03, 2003 04:26 PM

I recieved a trio of deckerti hatchlings from Adam Song (International Reptile Factory) a couple years ago. At the time the lineage data I got from him was his ID codes that he had for each of his snakes. The ID codes give Adam the info needed to go back and track the lineage of each of his snakes, unfortunately it doesn't help me. At the time, I didn't foresee Adam Song getting out of his snake business. I haven't been able to get in touch with Adam in order to get the lineage info I'd like to have at this time. I thought at the time they were Key Largo locale. They haven't gotten the darker reddish or burnt orange color normally on a Key Largo deckerti. I'll post a pic of the other deckerts I received. There is a spot in Key Largo where the deckerti may be this lighter phase. Has anyone else received or know the locale of Adam Song's deckerti stock?

Deckerti is a great addition for the collection. I've read recently that the teltale sign for deckerti is pink or reddish eyes. They have nice yellow under the chins. Thanks for the compliments Terry. I have to go out an get a digital of my own so I don't put up pics a few at a time.

new Gulf Hammock Rats. Good luck with finding more details on those guys and breeding them. Very nice looking rat snakes. My new Gulf Hammocks are doing very well, I'll post a crappy pic of them for now. I'm waiting for better weather and some size before i take a ton of pics.

Have a good one,

after you mentioned to me you were picking up a pair. Congrats, those should grow up to be a nice pair to work with. I'll probably regret not picking up a pair, but I do know where someone might be producing some in about 3 years. It looks like you're getting the rat snake bug and branching out Gregg. LOL. Don't let the pituophis in your collection find out. LOL It's good to see you picking up some rat snakes Gregg. You're picking up some great snakes doing it.

when that time comes. I'll post some more pics in a few months to show any changes in color and/or pattern.
Have a good one Terry,

WOW!! Beautiful snakes! I can see how the Deckerti and the Yellow Rat are commonly mistaken.I never realized how much they look a like!

There is alot to the variability of the obsoleta in Florida. Some of the newer info leans more to an idealistic point than a realistic one. IMHO. For example, the info and Field Guides tell of the orange everglades rat snake with a red tongue. The original descriptions of everglade specimens refer to a yellow/orange snake with a dark tongue flanked by red. The everglades tongue is not completely red. Is an evergalde that is yellow/orange an integrade with the yellow rat? Not necessarily. There is alot of quadrivittata influence that can be seen in the Florida obsoleta complex that has evolved so that the yellow shade does not always mean integrade. The tongue color helps. The eye color is another helpful ID indicator. I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. Good luck sullman.

As I stated on my post to sullman's above, I really like the Florida obsoleta complex. I try to work with and give them the justice that you give the beauty complex. Good luck Randy
