"Christmas" corn - what is he?

lovelyleopards Dec 20, 2003 11:34 AM

Here's another pic of my new baby corn. He was sol to me sight unseen as a Christmas corn - I thought it was just another name for Candy Cane. He does have very dark red eyes, not the light read that my blizzard does. The front half of him is very dark red with dark pink and in the back it lightens to a softer pink.Someone mentioned the possibility that he's a hybrid - would that mean that he's unbreedable? Why is it a bad thing if he is a hybrid? Whateer he is he's a very friendly an apparently healthy little guy. Thanks for any help!

that was me, that mentioned hybrid, and I am probably wrong. But apparently other are as well. I have no idea what a "Christmas" corn is.

It's not bad if he's a hybrid, and doesn't make him unbreedable. Just would mean that you'd want to label offspring as having emory blood. But again, I have NO idea if "Christmas" corns are hybrid or not. Depending on the breeder, most will say outright that is is a cross, so if it's a known and reputable breeder and they say it's pure corn...then it is

Sounds like a very pretty amel to me. I have a candy cane and an amel, both 03's, and my amel is similar to your xmas one, with the dark red eyes too. Maybe xmas corns are just specially bred amels? lol I really don't have a clue.

A book called "Corn Snakes and Other Rat Snakes" (Bartlett & Bartlett, 1996) suggests that "Bill Brant (The Gourmet Rodent) developed the Christmas corn snake. Dark green, rather than black, outlines the dorsal saddles" (p.46) Since the copyright is '96 on the book, the xmas corn may well be further developed by now...or maybe the name has been used to describe other morphs??? I would check Gourmet Rodent for further info if this morph interests you. Good luck with the new snake. Duffy

Bill Brant (Gourmet Rodent) to describe some corns from Daufuskie (sp?)Island. They were kind of hypo okeetee looking, but not exactly. I think the original wild caught ones were from about 10 or 15 years ago, so they have been a few generations in captivity. They were very pretty, if it is what I am thinking of. Sometimes they had a greenish ring around the saddles(hence the green and red Christmas name). But you would have to ask him if you want to be sure, since I don't work with those and may not remember the details properly.

I'd love to see a better picture of your snake, maybe one taken in natural sun light. I know thats kind of hard to do this time of year. Any way keep em coming.
