trick to the shower method?

lele Dec 20, 2003 03:46 PM

OK, I got a 6' fake pothos vine for her but Luna freaked (well, not really, she's really pretty mellow) when I placed her in the shower. In order to have a "fine" mist (which is actually impossible b/c of our water pressure) she would be too near other things that she might grab onto and then fall.

For now I have improvised. I hung her vine, put her on it and turned on the hot water full force (she is no where near it), closed the curtains and door and figure I will just steam her for awhile. I would assume this is an adequate replacement and maybe something she will look forward to rather than worrying about getting water in her eyes! we have very hard water here (20' dug well) so this may be a better option all around. Any thoughts or shower hints??

Lele,

I can't use the shower method where I live because of the amount of chemicals they put in our tap water.

I built a drip chamber that I use outside in the summer.

All it requires is about 3ft x 3ft section of hardware cloth, 2 large plastic pot saucers and a few wire ties. (about $15 total investment)

Roll the hardware cloth into a tube that fits down into one of the pot saucers and tie the hardware cloth off.
Take the other saucer and drill tiny holes through the plastic. (space them out depending on how much rain you want to create) Put the drilled saucer on top and fill it with water. It'll rain down through the cage for about 20 minutes or so.

Hey, cool! I'll have to remember that for next summer!

I put orion in the shower for the first time today. SheLOVED it. or, at least seemed to. I have a big biovine that i took from her cage, and i wraped it around the soapdish then over to a hook on the wall that you can tie the curtain back to. it's screwed in so it's good and solid. Before i put her in i ran the water on as low as i could for it to still come out of the shower. then i adjusted the temp and sprayed it on the wall above the soap thing. it rains right donw onto the vine. i put orion on the end of the vine away from the water. she looked around for five min then beelined into the water and went into her sleeping position, all curled up. I took her out to see if she was ok or stressed, and she went right back inagain.

hmmm....I may try your approach - letting her go to the water rather than putting her right in it. Are you afraid she may try to climb on the soap dish and fall? that's has me worried - it's a long drop to the tub floor!

Try diverting the spray through one of those handheld spray hoses or use a temporary spray nozzle that fits over the tub faucet. They are notorious for being lower pressure.

My shower set up is the old sort with the free-standing "ring" that holds the curtain, the shower head is cemented (our hard water) in place and the faucet is huge and I doubt I can find anything to fit it. hey, I have a cool claw foot tub so I can't complain too much

I think the steamy shower mist will work well, I also thought that I could put all three humidiiers in the bathroom, steam it up, put her on her vine and then keep them going for awhile.

Now that I found out that her sister, Ohana, just laid eggs (see Sonia's post above) I think much of her behavior is due to this as well. It also explains her pretty new colors!

The one concern I would have with this idea is that a fairly drastic change in humidity and temp when he's put back in her cage might be a problem. Maybe leave her in the shower to cool off gradually before you move her?

I will be sure to let her cool slowly and have the air in her room/cage warm as well. Thanks - I can count on you to always be thinking, Carlton !
