what kind of rodent bedding do you use?

rudedogsurfrat Dec 20, 2003 04:28 PM

I am looking for a smell free, ECONIMICAL bedding. I've tried the rabbit pellets but they are a pain. The pine is just too stinky for me. I went to a petstore that used care fresh and it didn't stink at all. That stuff is way too expensive.

"Yesterday News" is a pelleted paper product sold mostly as cat litter in some petstores. I use it for my guinea pigs but have heard it recommended for just about any rodent. It absorbs moisture and odours very well and isn't much more expensive than pine shavings. A 10 pound bag is about $11 CDN and if mixed with aspen or pine shavings, can last a long time.

Another possibility, if you don't have hundreds of containers to fill, is shredded newspaper. You can buy a shredder for about $30 and shred them youself (again this really isn't feasible if you have a huge amount of bins to fill). Mice love the shredded paper, it makes great nests. Or just line the bin with a sheet or two of newsprint or newspaper and the mice will spend alot of time shredding it themselves.
