I think the entire prasinus complex is stupendous, as well as the long tailed rock monitors, ie. kimberlies, pilbaras, and glebopalmas... but of them all, I would have to go with Varanus macraei.... you just don't get those colors in many other animals in nature...

hay there,
thats one pritty monitor you got there i like the vivid blue coloration

crocdoc2 Dec 20, 2003 06:50 PM

my favourites are 'normal' lace monitors, Varanus varius, for patterning, head shape and overall body conformation (personality is up there, too, but we are talking about which ones look the coolest, right?)

I also like the look of V giganteus, V glauerti, V indicus, V doreanus and V niloticus.

PERENTIES

SHvar Dec 20, 2003 08:43 PM

Komodo adults are absolutely breathtaking in person. Perenties are beautiful (beautiful patterns). Lace monitors of any color or pattern are pretty. Blue tree monitors are very beautiful in color. Yemen monitors are unique and Id love to have a few. But Albigs got me hooked and Ill always have at least one, bandeds are so pretty, BTs are pretty and so herculean. Soo many to pick from and so little space, what I could do if I was filthy rich and had all of the time and space Id like to have (can you imagine it "Varanid world" enter at your own risk, a mouses worst nightmare).

meretseger Dec 20, 2003 11:32 PM

Can't believe no one mentioned crocs. Perenties probably do look cooler but I've never seen one in person. Blue trees are just trying too hard.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

These are hands down the coolest monitors I own. They have awesome personalities, and the craziest stalking pose I have seen.

but these are close behind. Beautiful monitors that are sweet to work with, they just keep you on your toes.

then the Dumeril Monitor is the best by far! It's the only monitor I've had that has never tried to take off one of my fingers!

For me, Waters are my hands down favorites. They have that real "dragon" look. Right up there for looks are also niloticus, varius, indicus, doreanus and melinus.

I really don't think of a species as cool or the best or whatever, but instead of images of any species. Like this picture. Its simply really cool. F
