My brother has an algae problem in his RES aquarium.
He has a small submersible filter/pump. Some rocks he bought at a pet store. He has quite a bit of algae growing throughout the aquarium now.

Anyone know how and what's safe to get rid of the algae?

Thanks
Shane

Keeping the nitrite and ammonia levels down in the tank will starve the algae out. Cutting light levels helps too but that's sort of tough in a turtle tank. You could get some snails or Otocinclus to eat it, but most turtles will end up eating those. There's nothing WRONG with having algae per se, just the cosmetic issues. Some fish keepers let it grow all over the tank to help sponge up extra ammonia.

Greetings,

I must be algae week with RES'. Last week my tank, for the first time, had a huge brown growth in the corner furthest away form the filter.

I ended up cleaning the tank and replacing all the water. I added a product called Algae Fix from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. I have not noticed any new growth.

I also added another 3" of water to my tank and raised my basking area to meet the new water level.

Ravon-

Did you take your RES out when you put in the algae solution? Is it harmful at all to the turtle? I read about it at petsmart.com, but it only discusses fish. I want to make sure it won't hurt my turtle.

Thanks,
Meredith
