CANE TOAD not himself

sallie_keeper Dec 20, 2003 10:28 PM

I have a cool little cane toad that for the past few weeks has not been his usual self.. NOT eating, not really moving at all. He was staying in his waterbowl, 24 hours a day for the past 2 weeks, couple days ago he left bowl, but is now just hiding in his flower pot. And Still not eating. I am starting to worry about him. I haven't had him that long, and am still unsure if I am caring for him the right way.

I did call the local herp vet, but because he is a CANE TOAD, they will not see him...the vet said they do not deal with venomous reptiles...the idiot!!! So now I got to figure out this on my own...

Could his problem be just because of winter? And nothing is really wrong?? I know, I'm hoping it is an easy fix, but.....

Any advice would be so great...

thanks,
Harpy

Give us a rundown of his set-up... temps, substrate, decore and such. This will make it easier to help you and let you know if everything is correct.

If the temps have droped in your area and his enclosure is running on the cooler side it could just be a "hybernation" thing. But tell us all about how you have him set up and we can help you from there.

Hello, Thanks for the response.. I LOVE YOUR PICTURE....

As to the toad, He is in a 10 gal tank, with half the lenght his water tub.. (HE IS GETTING A BIGGER TANK FOR CHRISTMAS) Substrate is bed-a-beast, dry. There is a large hide in part of the tank(he stays in it most of time) There is plastic and silk plants, but they are just to help the toad feel more hidden. (He is a very shy toad.) Temp... He does have a small red fish-light on his tank, 25 watt.. Room temp is about 65F. I am in Pacific Northwest and it is rather cold outside, and sometimes inside.

I got this guy in Sept...He was dumped at local animal shelter and they had no idea what to do with him..(poor guy) He was doing really good up until about Thanksgiving.. Fed regularly, soaked only about once a day. After that he spent 2 weeks straight in his water, and now he is in his hide, and hasn't moved. I should note that I have not picked him up and looked at him, cause I wasnt sure if I should or not. If he is in a state of hibernation, wouldn't it bother him to be disturbed??

Thanks again,
Harpy
