Anyone keep Elaphe Carinata (Chinese King Rat Snake)?

RalphSnakeMan Dec 20, 2003 11:07 PM

Anyone here keep them?

I am looking at getting 1.1 E. Carinata and possibly breeding them next season, anyone here doing the same?

Would love to hear from you...

Thanks for your time,
Ralph

I've got a pair of double het for hypo and amel, but they're just babies right now.

I keep a large six foot male, and my boyfriend has a younger pair. They're neat guys. Fiesty though. Not hets for anything. We're up in Canada, so they're not as easy to come by. They don't seem terribly popular.

They weren't widely CB until a few years ago. Heck, Ophidophile got one of his from the same guy I got mine from. I think the morphs might help make this species more widely known, 'cause they're cool snakes. Not many people into big colubrids though.

You know...This is an example of how the world changes. back in the early eighties dealers had trouble (in Florida) giving those snakes away for $25 each w/c. They were known then as the "Stinking Goddess" because all they seemed to do was bite or musk (they have oversized glands). Now I see they are prized and the price has more than quadrupled. The last one I saw for sale was offered at $175 at a show for an adult. (I should say that I DID keep them then, because they really are cool looking)I guess every dog has his day....

I remember them being that cheap back in the late 80s. Hogg Island boas and Mexican boas also fell into the 'trash snake' category ($15-25 wholesale) at that time but look at their prices now. I could have picked up Pancake tortoises at $55 apiece then as well - $750 last time I checked.
