Re-entering Hobby-Trouble Already?

BrianT Dec 21, 2003 12:39 AM

Recently I decided my hiatus from the reptile hobby should finally come to an end. I used to keep varanids (Robyn may remember me), but upon deciding to keep reptiles again, I decided vegetarians would be the way to go. The obvious choice was uromastyx. I found a deal I couldn't pass up and was hoping things would start off right. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. I had asked the seller to either ship Friday so they'd arrive Saturday, or ship next week (preferably Tuesday, but could have made arrangements if shipped Monday). This afternoon I was informed the 1.1 yellow nigers and 1.0 mali's I ordered were shipped out today and won't arrive until Monday. I live in NJ and it's down right cold here. I have their enclosure ready to go, but what should I expect come Monday? I've always had my animals shipped overnight w/o a problem, but this time I'm worried. Let me know if I should take any extra precautions this time around, I'm really hoping I don't receive three scaly icicles.
Thanks,
Brian

If they are packaged well, you shouldn't have a big problem, they will just be a bit chilly. I am also in NJ, and the temps are around 30-40's i believe...When you get them home i would make sure their setup is all ready and put them in near/under the basking light. After they are decnetly warmed up i would give them a hot soak. They should be ok though. Where did you get them from? Where in NJ are you? I am from Atnatic Highlands, in Monmouth county.
Good luck and post some pics laater!

I'm in Northern NJ, Warren County. I bought the trio from Monster Pet Shop in CA. It's a newer business and the price was right, so I figured I'd give them a shot. Not to mention, the owner is a mustang fanatic like myself

I'm another neighbor, I'm in S. Jersy, has been real cold here. But they are usually shipped with heatpac, and hopfully all will be fine.

Sounds like you are getting some real nice new friends, :0) let us know when they arrive, and post some pics, when they get all nice and toasty, and settled in. Love to see them.

dont put them uder the heat lamp right away as you can cause them to have a seizure from cold to hot so quickly.put them box and all in the room where the tanks are for about an hr. or so and you should be good

Well, I took the day off today so I'd be home to receive my uros. 4pm rolled around and I decided it was time to call someone and find out why they weren't here by 3pm as was stated when shipped. The tracking system online was worthless, so I called the postal service directly and found out that my shipment had been delayed, but would be here tomorrow before noon. Upon learning this I immediately e-mailed the seller and told them I was not too happy as I'd missed a day's pay and was probably gonna receive three DOA Uro's and I expected something to be done about it especially since they weren't shipped on the day we'd agreed upon (Monday). The seller looked into it, got the same info I did from the postal service, and said they will take care of everything if there are any problems. I'll keep you all updated as I now have to take off a half day tomorrow...feels like I may be getting the bug that's going around

If at all possible, I always try to avoid having animals shipped close to the Christmas holiday. The carriers mean well, but your animal ends up being just another package and can get delayed or lost, something not detrimental to an inanimate object, but potentially fatal to a reptile.
I bought a gargoyle gecko last week and am delaying having it shipped until after the first of the year, I am too afraid of something happening to him. I hope your uros arrive safe and sound! Have a Merry Christmas!

Well, The Uros were delayed and were supposed to arrive today by noon time. They never showed up, so at 4pm I called USPS and found out my package was missing. They started an urgent search and said they'll contact me within the next 24hrs. I e-mailed the seller as I think we can be pretty sure I'm going to have 3 DOA's. Talk about a bad way to be re-starting.
