Found out why my Death Heads are dying....

Justin M Dec 21, 2003 10:43 AM

Recently I posted about my adult death heads dying for no reason and some said, maybe protein, others(me) said maybe hydration. Well I noticed yesterday that there was this "thing" in there that looked like a superworm but with no head or legs and there was one dead death head. Then today I noticed one of those "things" coming out of the end of a roach and the roach was near death. I am not sure what these things are but I do think this is the problem. Any ideas?

Justin,

just a guess but could it be an egg sac? I was trying to find a pic to post for comparison but haven't yet. They lay their eggs in a sac (like mantids do) and some look like headless and legless yellowish worms b/c they have segments. I could be wrong, but can't imagine what else it can be. I am sure they have parasites (usually wasps) that will attack them but I think most lay their eggs in the roach egg sac and wouldn't survive to adulthood. So that's the amateur entomologist's thinking...

Here are a few pix on Google. The color, etc. will vary depending on species.
