Getting a ball python maybe...

beardielover13 Dec 21, 2003 11:58 AM

I might be getting a ball python or two this spring. What size of cage would be needed? I am only getting one if the size of cage isn't huge. What are the correct temps that are needed? Thanks.

I am sure if you do a search you will find all the information you need.

That is true, you should be able to find the answer to the question. BUT, if you keep answering by telling them to do a search, you are going to eventually end up with a list of questions with the answer "do a search." Besides, the search function on the board is horrible, as you probably know. So, answer the question or don't answer at all! Thanks for listening to my rant.

go look at the caresheets section, that would be a good place to start and then just keep reading all the stuff on this forum.

Go to your favorite search engine whether it be Google, Excite, Hotbox, etc. and put in "ball python caresheets". Read everything you can on the web, then buy a book or two. Here's a URL to a couple of books.

After doing your research, you should have a real good idea about what the ball python community thinks.

This wasn’t one of those “I just bot a balls piton at a swap, pleez tell me everythin I need to no about balls now pleez!!!” This person asked two specific questions.

Regarding cage size, many people keep these animals in plastic sweater box type containers in racks. For hatchlings, I use this arrangement. Something like 26”W x 18”D x 6”H would be nice. For adults, I like reptile cages (check out Vision, Boaphile, Precision), but, again, some people prefer racks. I think 36”W x 28”D x 18”H is a pretty good size for an adult. I like to go even bigger for really large adults, but you don’t see all that many “giant” ball pythons. Regarding temperatures, I aim for a gradient of 78 degrees at one end to 88 degrees at the other. It is somewhat flexible. If you do get two animals as you indicated you might in your post, most people would recommend that you keep them caged separately.
BTW, if I were interested in something cold-blooded with four legs, my first choice would be a bearded dragon. How friendly are they over in that forum if I wanted to ask some questions?
