Meal Worms?

AzLunchbox Dec 21, 2003 01:21 PM

Hey everyone.....i'm still having minor problems getting Timmy to eat.....he eats some but not all that much........he mainly ignores crickets.....but every now and then will grab one when i put them in......if they stay in for awhile most of them end up hiding under rocks or getting tramppled while timmy tries running up the glass and jumpping and all.

But lately he's taken to mealworms pretty good....i got him to eat 3 yesterday and so far 2 today.......so i was wondering if it was safew for collared lizards to eat mealworms as a staple of their diet......cuz if it will cause impaction i don't want to do it....but he's awfully skinny and needs to start eating regularly.

So what do you people think? are mealworms safe to give him every day? or at least about every other day?

thanks for the help.

No, I would vary his diet ! If he does not eat the cricket when offered take it out. After a while (if cricket has not eaten it is of no nutritional value anyway. Offer him food every other day if he is not eating, or wait a couple of days , he will be more interested if hes' more hungry !

As far as mealies they are fine along with crickets, although mealies are high in chitin, hard to digest, I would consider when they are done buying superworms.
The superworms are easier to digest, bigger, and mine LOVE them. They also fatten them up !

but aren't super worms too big for them?
i mean everyone has told me that bearded dragons love super worms but to wait till the dragon is adult to feed it to them......and an adult bearded dragon is ALOT bigger then a collared lizard lol.

anyways i'm going to the pet store soon to buy food so let me know......and if i get super worms do i have to crush their heads before feeding them to timmy?

also a friend suggested trying a small pinky mouse.....would that be a good idea?

thanks.

They are not to big for collareds. I would not offer one to a hatchling, but I started at a few months old. My lakoda is 5 months, he eats them all the time.

As far as their heads, I never have removed them, they learn how to eat them, believe me. I got pinched by a super tons of times, but it isn't much, and if you observe when they eat they usually pick it up by the back end and start choming, so by the time they get to the front, the worm is not real nippy anymore. :P

And Matt, if they can eat a pinkie, they sure can eat a superworm, think about it !

Some people use the pinkies, I DON'T can't do it(feel bad) some collareds eat them some are very disinterested in them. YOUR CHOICE !

LOL I am too girly to feed superworms...they scare me!!! I use wax worms and crickets. The wax worms fatten them up and are soft to chew.

This is a shot of about a 3 month old collared eating a moth with a big fat body about 3 inches long.

For about two weeks before this picture was taken, Casey wasn't really eating very well. Don't know why. But she came back with a vagrance.
