Russian Tortoise Housing?????

turtle96 Dec 21, 2003 05:21 PM

I know this is probly a stupid question but I need to know it. I live in IL and I have 3 male and 4 female russian tortoises I keep thme in 40 gallon cages but was reading and it said glass cages are not good. My other option was pens but I can't dont have the room. And then I thought of Big tubs for them. Does any one have any helpful info????

How many do you have to each tank?
I, along with many other keepers, have not seen any porblems keeping these guys in a glass tank. If they are bored they will try to get out no matter what kind of enclosure you have them in.
I have my russians (2.2) in a 2 x 4 enclosure but I've set up a deal to where I've increased their available floor space by close to 50%. The enclosures I have are a kind of bunk bed setup. I'll try and get you some pictures of the setup tomorow.
The whole setup can be made for $100 but takes some work.
Then you can use always use cement mixing tubs or Rubbermaid underbed blanket boxes.

Another way to create inexpensive pens is to use bookcases with the shelves removed. I use a converted melamine bookcase from Wal-Mart for my hatchling Hermann's (about $20). The backs aren't very sturdy, so you might want to put in a better floor. The smaller bookcases are usually about 2' x 3', and I think the larger ones are 5' x 2'.
