Why have my mice stopped breeding?

Gary42 Dec 21, 2003 06:12 PM

I have two 10 gal aqur. with 1 male and 3 female mice in each cage. I have had mice in this arrangement for about 18 months. I have cycled in new breeding males and females so these mice are only about 4-6 months old. They have all been breeding well until it got cold here (temps outside from 30's to 50's). Last winter there were in the same room with temps around 50 deg at the coldest (it's where the corns stay for the winter) and they had pinks all year long. For some reason this year, both cages have stopped having pinks....any ideas why? The cold didn't make a difference last year...nothing else is different that I can think of. Anyone else having the same experience?

Thanks in advance.

50* is pretty cold. I can't explain last year but your temperature would be my first guess. I try to keep mine between 70 and 75*.

6 months of age is when I start to see production slowing down. Some go for 10 or 12 months but that is unusual. I start watching mine for replacement when they reach 6 months.

I HAD THAT HAPPEN A FEW WEEKS AGO. I LIVE IN NORTHERN INDIANA AND ITS COLD AS HELL HERE. RATS AND MICE BOTH STOPPED BREEDING. I FOUND THE CURE, HEAT TAPE. THEY ARE JUST TO DAMN COLD AND A FEW DAYS AGO I HAD A RAT DROP 16 LITTLE TASTY TREATS. THEY ALL SLEEP ON THE HEAT TAPE AS WELL. GOOD LUCK.

My mice have not been breeding much either but my buddy has alot of mice going on right now. We basically keep our setups in our garages so the temps are between 50 and 65 degrees. Do you really think heating is the way to go?

If so what are good ways of heating that doesn't cost alot. If it costs alot then it is not worth the effort and I may as well just buy mice.

The females start to put on a little weight and quite frankly the guys just loose interest.

Yeah it is weird. they start telling the male mice what to do and who to hang out with. They make them do chores and not let them hang with the boys. Then they don't care what they look like anymore.
I know what you are saying.

Mice live to about 2 years old. Female mice go into Menopause around 16 to 18 months of age. This is probably why production has stopped. Heavy breeding causes hormonal changes that effect litter size and on set of Menopause. This is why it is important to cycle in new breeding groups to the colony.
