female breeding size?

gravity Dec 21, 2003 06:18 PM

I am wondering what the minimum recommended size (length/weight) of the females before breeding. I have two colombian females, each a little over four and a half feet long, is there any chance a can breed them winter of 04? Thanks for any feedback, Dale.

I would say at the minimum......The female needs to be at least 2 1/2 years old, around the 6ft mark, and at least 12lbs.

I think it is much better/healthier for them to be a bit more mature though.

Funny you should say 12 lbs. That's what makes sense to me... But I had someone the other day insisting that females needed to be 25 lbs or more. Personally, I think a 25 lb BCI is a fatty

Well, remember 12lbs is a "bare minimum". I personally think a mature female should weigh more than that. I have one female that is being bred this year who is over three years and is around 16-18lbs or so. I also have another female that is 5 years and is around 25lbs. I think it is much healthier for the boa to be mature and have some good size on them. I think 25lbs is a good size. Just as long as it is a mature animal...........And, not a pumped up one.

I tried breeding a female that was 2 1/2 years and 12-13 lbs. She had a premature litter. I can't say that it was because she was too young or too small. But, it was enough to make me never want to bred a female that young or small again.
