Genetics question

gmherps Dec 21, 2003 08:12 PM

If I breed a Poss DH Snow ball python to a normal, are my odds 25% of producing a DH Snow? I know I should (should being the key word) produce something that will be het, but what are my actual chances of producing a DH Snow? The reason I'm asking this is because if DH Snow's breed to each other 1-16 should be Snows. Any help?
Thanks a lot!

I had a double het question a while ago so heres what ive learned, assuming your snake is a double het you will get all normal looking babies, out of 4:1 will be normal,1 het axanthic,1 het albino and 1 double het snow.So trying to figure out whos who in the clutch would be tough.
The trick to figuring out the genetics of stuff is to remember the snake gets 2 genes-1 from each parent, and a different set of genes for each color trait(thats the part i was messed up on),so the snow snake has 2 recessive genes for albino, and 2 recessive genes for axanthic.Your double het has only 1 recessive gene of each, and one dominant(normal)of each.
Make sense?Clear as mud?

A possible het snow is exactly what it says.

For example I purchased 4 males from the same clutch. They were from breeding a 100% dh male to a normal! The results should be
on average I should have the following:
1 normal
1 het albino
1 het axanthic
1 dh snow.

The trick is what is the animal you or I were/are buying? That is why they are soooooo inexpensive. Lot of work but if you hit-will have an expensive animal. Oh yea all the dh males I bought could be all normals or all dh snows.......I doubt it but I could happen.

Hope this helps.
