Dennis-
The barring pattern is not an absolute sure thing. Y is most common in Ambilobe and Ambanja. V is not common in the locales but often found in locales that don't sport the typical Y or U shape for there locale. U barring is common in Sambava, Diego, and Tamatave. I have seen exceptions in just about every locale so color will also play a key role in locale ID, and even then its not perfect. (By "Y" I am referring to the middle bar connecting from top to bottom of the body. By "V" I am referring to the middle bar in a V shape that connects only to the top of the body not bottom. By "U" I am referring to the middle bar in a U shape that only connects to the top of the body.) Hope this helps!
