Humidity and temperature levels for PTS, could someone please remind me...(more)

icequeen Dec 22, 2003 08:32 AM

Could someone please remind what the ideal temperature and humidity levels are for a PTS.

I've just bought Dill a warm mist humidifier, as opposed to the cool mist one. It seems to work much more efficiently, and the temps, and humidity levels seem to remain consistanly high.
Humidity is running around 80%, and temp is running at about 23-25 degrees celcius.

Since I started using this humidifier Dill seems MUCH more active, and alert.

Previously I was having a hard time getting the humidity to get above and stay above 50 to 60%.
Now, I'm wondering if there is such a thing as too MUCH humidity.
I know I will have to really watch for mold...but other than that, are there any other concerns with the higher humidity?

I'm so nervous about it...because warm humid air caused my chameleon to become very ill with 2 respiratory infections in the past.

I know...different species...but I'm still leary.

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

Hi Kim,

Your humidity level is fine but YES stagnant air w/o any circulation can lead to fungal problems. Your temperature is good for part of the day but you should arrange a slight fluctation at times into the low eighties. (=29 Celsius) Also keep a proper light cycle. Otherwise, You might find Dill slowing down alittle in eating.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sincerely,
Brian

what do you mean by "proper light cycle"? Should it be shortened during the winter months?
Her lights usually go on around 8 in the morning and stay on till 8 or 9...sometimes even 10 at night.

Dill has pretty good ventilation in her cage. There is a 12 sq inch screen opening on the top, as well as two side vents...one near the top on one side, on the other side the vent is near the bottom.
Her doors are made of screen as well, but I have covered them with clear plastic for the time being...I have electric heat...which dries everything out...as well as the fact that there can be a cold draft that blows across the floor...so I'm hoping that the plastic over the doors will prevent the draft from getting to her, and will also prevent the electric heat from sucking the moisture out of her enviorment.
She just seems so much more perky with the warm mist humidifier. Maybe I'm imagining her enthusiasm....I don't know.

Anyway,
Thank you for your help.

Kim,

I would reduce the light by shutting it down around 5-6 P.M.

If your still working nights, You can still catch Dill with the lights on when you get home in the morning or right after you wake up.

Watch those drafts!

Sincerely,
Brian
