ChristyJ, Thanks for the great idea for substrate... more

brdfreak Dec 22, 2003 08:40 AM

i bought some of the duck shelf liner from WalMart this past weekend and it is THE BEST!! doesn't slip like paper or paper towles, crickets can't get under and hide, I can spot clean then just throw it in the dishwasher with the rest of the cage stuff once a week and it doesn't stain (at least not yet).

I also noticed after putting the crix in to feed that they leave quite a bit of thier feces in the cage even though they aren't in there very long. GROSE!! I can't believe I was using nasty heavy sand all this time. It smells better in there now and the dragons even seem to look a little better for some reason? I changed the sand at least once a month but I think GrimDog was right about there being alot of bugs in the stuff from the poo or whatever...

Just had to put my foot down about the best substrate... =-)
Thanks,
Robert

It is the best I've found so far. I started using it about 2 years ago, and finally after a year using it myself without problems I shared the idea with everyone on the forum. It took a while to before the first person tried it. Glad it is working out good for you. That's the main reason I thought of this cause I was hating picking the crickets out that would hide under the repti-carpet and come out at night, and they would slip on the paper. I use to have to go through 10 cages at lights out to make sure none stayed in all night and bit the dragons. This is just so much easier, and everything stays on top and gets eaten by night time. I leave a bit of overlap on the sides and use a dust pan for any of the cricket poop or pellets that fall out of the dish. I have 8 cages now with dragons, and if you came in my house blind you would not no the dragons were there, there is just no smell left after you wipe up the poop. My dragons had no problems at all adapting to it from sand and carpet, and seem to like the traction they get on the liner.

I got one with a pattern. The whole cage just looks so much cleaner, and even bigger!

How does this look like? Do you have a picture? I don't think we have it in Sweden... can you describe it more in detail? Please!

I was using another liner at first, but I really like the spongey Duck brand much better. I have to agree about sand. Not only does the cricket poop stay in there, but the extra liquid from beardie pee sinks to the bottom and stays there. You can sift, but the wet sand falls through the sifter. It's just all around safer and cleaner and there can be no dispute about that.

I use it and will never switch back to sand, carpet or even newspaper.

It is clean, easy to maintain and safe .... what more could you ask for? lol

I'll never use anything else again. Do you guys use the stuff that comes in the 6' rolls or the 4' rolls. I bought the 6' rolls. It doesn't seem to be as thick but I liked the surface better. Seemed like it would be easier to clean up. I'd never have thought to use shelf liner. Great idea!

I buy the Duck rolls in 20inch wide by I thought it was 5ft long, cause I do have to cut it for my 4x2 cages but thought that there was only a foot left over. It could be 6 I guess, LOL not sure. They are definitely longer then 4ft long though. The ones I buy have like a spongy rubber like backing that keeps it from slipping. Not very thin. It does have some spongy padding to it. Here is the web site to the exact ones I buy, but there are a lot more colors then what is shown there, and of course it does not tell ya how long it is. http://www.duckproducts.com/products/detail.asp?catid=5&subid=24&plid=105&PID=360

i switched my baby from paper towels to the shelf liner and love it (this is my first beardie),, but did i read correctly that you can put it in the dishwasher??? I've got two pieces cut, one for using while the other is cleaning/drying but if i can just put it in the dishwasher,,,, hey, i'm all for less work for me!!!

It seems it would also get sterilized better in the hotter pulsating water ( unless of course you bleacheed it which could ruin it?) I don't know yet, I'll try it next weekend though. I think we should make everyone use it. Pass some legislation or something.

Wipe down daily , then disinfect once a week with vinegar, followed by peroxide.
