Multiple litters in same tray questions....

wallyworld Dec 22, 2003 09:17 AM

Hi,

I currently have several 1.2 colonies setup. Apparently prior to my setting the colonies up, 1 female became pregnant prior to the other, as a result I had 2 litters in the same tray approximately 2 weeks apart.

I am curious to know what experience breeders do about this if anything. I didn't want the little ones to lose out, or suffocate or anything that would cause them to die off, since that defeats the purpose of breeding to begin with.

Also, I am curious how folks keep records for production purposes, I find it difficult to keep track of who did what after the babies have been removed.

Any thoughts?

you didn't say how big you cage was but I don't see any problem with two litters in there. The mothers may divide them up into two piles or may lump them together but you will probably be ok.

Try every once in a while to separate the pinkies into their own pile separate from the fuzzies. The moms will mix them up again but they will be fed separately for a while.

My colonies are set up 1.5 so sometimes I have 5 different litters in there at 5 different ages. I try to not let them get over crowded but it can still get tight sometimes.

Record keeping: I give each colony a number and I have a chart with the colony numbers across the top and the dates down the left side. I don't try to keep track of births. Everytime I take anything out of a colony I record that. I just mark next to the date for that colony 12p for 12 pinkies, 12w for weanlings as so on.

Every 4 weeks I total how many mice I have removed from a colony and get an average for each colony. I expect 10 per week per colony or I feed off the breeders.

Hope that helps.
