Getting worried about temp!

Harker Dec 22, 2003 12:03 PM

Just stuck to sticky thermometers on my tank, they have been on about 2 hours, and the temps aer only reading 69F cool side, 77F hot side, im worried my heat mat isnt giving off enough heat, and i dont have a thermostat...? what can i do?

Cheers Anthony.

sticky thermometers are pretty useless If they are on the outside of the tank, then the floor on the inside of it is probably warmer than they show. Best is to get a couple cheap little round ones and just lay them on the floor of the cage. Since that's where your snake is most of the time, that's where the temp should be measured.

The ones I have I got for about $2.50(u.s.) each.

It is tough to get good temperature measurments, those sticky thermometers are checking the temp of the glass. Try like icelady said and bury the thermometer in the substrate at the two ends of the cage and then see what the temp is.

Erm, the temps are going up and down, they have stopped at 69F cool and 73F hot, how long will it be if these temps are correct'ish before the snake gets ill...?

Cheers Anthony.

It's not so much of how long till he gets sick as it is just that he won't be real healthy at those temperatures. Without a little more belly heat the snake won't be able to digest his food. Undigested food in the stomach will certainly make him sick.

Let's not wait for that. If you are sure your temperatures are being measured correctly figure out some way to add heat. A heating pad, a light on top of the cage, heat tape, something.
