Let's throw another log onto the substrate debate fire: Shelf Liner

LeoBeginner Dec 22, 2003 03:31 PM

Has anyone used shelf liner? Half the BD forum seems to have switched to it. I seems like a good idea, and I know you can get 12" wide liner which would be perfect for my 10gal....The rubbery stuff would probably be nice and grippy too. Any thoughts?

I don't know what material you are referring to. Do you mean contact paper, or something different?

It looks like some sort of rubbery/plasticy dealie. Seems like a good idea. It's waterproof, so it won't get soaked with urate, it's washable (people put it in the dishwasher), and it's cheap. It seems like a good idea, so maybe someone who uses it for beardies and has leos has some input?

Just kind of seems like an easy solution that could be applied fromthe BD forum.

Why on earth would anyone want to put that in the dishwasher if it's been soiled with reptile poo? At the advice of health experts, people shouldn't be washing reptile dishes/supplies/cages in the kitchen sink. It increases the risk of salmonella.

But I could be wrong. It's some kind of vinyl material that she sanded down.

Nope, I actually don't use shelfliner, I use floor tile. But I know a LOT of people on the beardie forum use it for their beardies, and there was a pic just recently posted of it.

Hello

Good thought however I would rather use paper towels for my geckos cause im really into disposable stuff deli cups papertowels etc(I like it cause it keeps clean) You could use shelf liner as a disposable however I change my towels daily this could get expensive. I have used it for baby pythons and boas during feeding time so they wont get a mouth full of bedding at the petshop I work at. For those of you who dont know what it is shelf liner is like a real thick mesh style in all different colors that is really soft and grippy most people use it in there forks and knives droor in there house and on well shelfs.

Just my input

Shelf liner has holes in it, & I didn't think it was an absorbative material. Doesn't the pee run through & soil the bottom of your cage?

i use it in my gecko tanks and my beardie tanks too. it is really nice and neat. i put a paper towel down where they go ..and change out the liner every 3 weeks to be washed. i have used vinyl/shelfliner for a lil under a year now and love it. it is clean looking and very attractive.

I think it's worth a try. I don't think I'd put it in the dishwasher (I'm moving in a week anyway and won't have one there), but it seems easy enough to clean up. I like that it comes in different colours/patterns. you can add a little style to the tanks.

I don't think this stuff is porous. There's non-slip matting that's a rubbery mesh that's used to keep things from sliding around, but my understanding is that's different than shelf liner. I think this shelf liner stuff is a solid rubbery mat that doesn't absorb stuff. But I may be wrong. I think I still like the idea of slate, but this might be something worth trying...

yeah..i don't mine in the dish washer either.. i hand wash mine.. it is non absorbant clean looking and really easy to mantain.. and holds heat nicely... i can't say anything bad about it. in fact i have had a better sucess rate with leos than with beardies.. my beardies tend to be a lil messy
