"blonde" western hognose? whats the deal?

fill Dec 22, 2003 08:15 PM

Im interested in all colors of hogs, especially weird morphs. Someone im talking to about purchasing a snake from calls his snake a "blonde" phase. I havent heard too much about this color form. Is it just a light colored normal with a reduced pattern? What are your thoughts out there in hognose land? This is a beautifull animal and im going to purchase it anyway. I was just wondering what your thoughts where on the topic of "blonde" westerns.

Most likely what your friend has is a Blonde Madagascan or Malagasy hognosed snake. There is a yellow phase western but they can be pretty pricey. You can get some info on the blonde Mad. hog as well as some pics if you go to http://www.hognose.com.

You know as I thought about it some more it could also be a blonde phase Mexican Hognose(Hererodon nasicus kennerlyi). I have seen them, go for as much as 1000.00 and hets for 500.00. If that is what he has I would dewfinitely snatch it up for a good price.

That's exactly what it is: a "light colored normal with a reduced pattern" -- IF you’re talking about a western/plains hognose. If it's a Mexican, they are completely different and MUCH pricier. Don't ever get the "Blond" Westerns mixed up with the Blond Mexicans. I think that some dealers want you to get the two mixed up so you think you’re getting a deal on a rare Mexican Blond Hognose, but it’s actually a Western.
You might be thinking of a Blond Malagasy Hognose, which is another story.
