Where to find Swiss Webster & Sprague Dawley???

artfan1 Dec 22, 2003 08:27 PM

I am going to start a couple of colonies of mice and rats. Of course, I wanted to get the best breeders I could and I was pointed towards SAS Supply, www.sassupply.com .

They are very nice people and very professional. They answered my emails quick and have just what I am looking for.
They will hand pick, unrelated groups, clean of disease and parasites, and ship them isolated in seperate containers and such.

BUT, since they can only send them to me by airline, that makes things a little difficult. Although we have two airports within a 30 minute drive, they are not major airports and the airline they use does not fly in there. The closest is St. Louis which is a 7 hour round trip for me. And Chicago which is even farther.

I will do that, I mean, it's not like I have to to it all the time. And I don't mind the $40- $75 shipping fee for this one time. But before I go to such extremes I was wondering if everyone does this to get their breeders?
Does anyone happen to know of any suppliers in the Central Illinois area.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Troy

There are a couple of lab type supply places on the east coast (but they won't deal with you and I) and I found one in California.

I ordered mine from SAS many years ago and made the 600 mile round trip to pick them up. I feel it was worth it. My breeders are still the offspring of that original bunch.

Hmm, I wonder if they will ship to Canada?

I called SAS. prices are as follow:

4 week olds --- $12.00/ea. (!!!)
8 week olds --- $30.00/ea. (!!!!!)

Is it me or are the prices a bit steep?

Ben

The price is sure high for a rat or mouse alone. But your getting more than that.
At least, that's how I see it.

I spent way more than that on my snakes. And I want a good start on breeding feeders.

The SAS stuff for example, is tested, to be clean of disease and parasites. Plus, they send you unrelated pairs or groups. That's a value I want for sure.

They also supply cats and dogs for research too. I don't think I could support a company that does this.

They also supply rats and mice for research. Research is part of the world. To further science testing on animals must be done. This is why we have these high yield lines of rodents. I do not promote all animal research but some is just neccesary. Just my opinion I know I will be yelled at for this.

Then what do you recommend they use? Humans?

Research is part of the world. It furthers education, knowledge and it's all pretty obvious, you can find the good and bad through research.

I've posted this a while back, but I couldn't help but post it again when I read your post Satori.

If you buy from Rodentpro you'll get the joke.
